Traditional Craftsmanship for Modern Homes

Lime Plastering: Traditional Craftsmanship for Modern Homes
Lime plastering is a centuries-old technique that has experienced a significant revival in recent years, particularly for period property restoration and eco-conscious building projects. At Shepley Plastering, we combine traditional methods with modern expertise to deliver exceptional lime plastering services throughout Stockport and the surrounding areas.

What is Lime Plastering?
Lime plaster is a traditional building material made from lime putty or natural hydraulic lime (NHL) mixed with sand and sometimes reinforcing fibres. Unlike modern gypsum-based plasters, lime plaster cures through a slow carbonation process, absorbing carbon dioxide from the air to gradually transform back into limestone over time.

The primary types of lime plaster include:

  • Non-hydraulic lime plaster (made from lime putty) – Sets through carbonation alone
  • Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL) plaster – Sets initially through reaction with water, followed by carbonation
  • Hot-mixed lime plaster – Traditional method involving mixing quicklime with sand and water

The Unique Properties of Lime Plaster
Lime plaster differs fundamentally from modern plasters in its behaviour and characteristics. It remains slightly flexible rather than rigid, allowing buildings to naturally move and settle without causing cracks. This breathable material manages moisture effectively, absorbing and releasing humidity to create healthier internal environments.

Benefits of Lime Plastering

Breathability and Moisture Management – Lime plaster allows walls to “breathe,” permitting water vapour to pass through rather than trapping it within the building fabric.

Historical Authenticity – For period properties, lime plaster provides authentic restoration that maintains the building’s historical integrity.

Environmental Benefits – With significantly lower carbon emissions during production compared to cement-based alternatives, lime plaster is an environmentally responsible choice. The carbonation process reabsorbs some CO₂ during curing.

Aesthetic Appeal – Lime plaster offers a distinctive depth and subtle variation in texture and tone that cannot be replicated by modern plasters.

Durability -While requiring more skill to apply, properly executed lime plastering can last for centuries, as evidenced by its presence in historical buildings that have stood for hundreds of years.

Natural Antibacterial Properties -The high alkalinity of lime creates an environment inhospitable to mold and bacteria, contributing to healthier living spaces.

At Shepley Plastering, our skilled craftsmen combine traditional lime plastering techniques with modern application methods to deliver beautiful, durable finishes that honor your building’s heritage while providing contemporary performance benefits.
